Dana Plato was a prominent American TV and film actress on the television show, Diff’rent Strokes, and she played the character of Kimberly Drummond. After her role on Diff’rent Strokes, her career went into a tailspin. She did have some roles in independent movies though. She died when she was 34 from a painkiller overdose, along with Soma. She died on May 8, 1999.
Her last interview was on the Howard Stern Show, where she told Robin and Stern that she had an engagement to someone who was the manager of her career. She was truthful with her life, talking about her money difficulties and former entanglements with law enforcement. She admitted to problems with drug addiction and alcoholism, but she said that she had been sober for over ten years at that point, and that she was not any drugs, except for prescribed painkillers which were for the discomfort caused by her wisdom teeth, which were removed. A lot of the callers called her a lot of mean names, from drug addict to has-been and more. She was called a lesbian ex-con drug addict with mental illness by one caller. This made her mad, and she even said she would do a drug test right on the air, and she even made a bet on the test results to one especially doubtful caller. Some callers, as well as Howard Stern, defended Plato, and they complimented and consoled her too.
After three calls which were negative, one caller said that she couldn’t understand why the callers were being mean to her, and that she sounded and looked great, and could not believe that callers were assailing her. Plato cried because of her thankfulness, as well as to another caller who was also a recovering addict, and he said that he believed it all, and that what she was saying was true.
The day afterward, her and her boyfriend were returning home to California. They stopped at his mother’s house to visit her on Mother’s Day. She went to nap inside her RV that was parked near the house, and she then died of a drug overdose. Her death was called a suicide. Her body was cremated.
Dana Plato had a troubled career, a checkered past, a history of drug addiction, and a problem with alcohol. Her death was saddening for a lot of people, including the people who listened to the Howard Stern Show.
Her son also committed suicide on Mother’s Day, because Mother’s Day was an especially difficult time for him. It was Mother’s Day, and his mother had died. It was also the anniversary of when she had committed suicide. The son was experimenting with drugs and alcohol at the time of his death. It was a tragic set of circumstances that both the mother and son committed suicide. It was a tragic end to what could have been a greater career. She could have gone much further and done much more if she had not chosen to commit suicide. However, a lot of famous people have committed suicide even at the peak of their careers.
